1/4/2024 0 Comments Personal reflectionMental health practitioners have long regarded practices associated with self-reflection as beneficial to mental well-being and health in general. “Whether you are interested in furthering your career, strengthening your relationship or repairing old friendships, self-reflection will allow you to understand if your participation in this area of life is actually leading to the result you are looking for,” Scolaro says. It’s the starting point for positive change, says Brie Scolaro, LMSW, co-director of Aspire Psychotherapy in New York City. Simply understanding, however, isn’t the end goal of self-reflection. But the core action that defines self-reflection is looking inward for understanding. It can take many forms-yoga, meditation, nature walks and controlled breathing are all associated practices. It’s a tool that helps you gain perspective on your strengths, behaviors, thoughts and desires. It’s the act of looking inward with the goal of understanding who you are, how you feel and where you want to be. Read on to learn the science behind self-reflection and how you can harness it to improve your life in 2022 and beyond. But since that time, research has put self-reflection on the menu for those who are hungry for science-backed ways to improve their lives. And if you’re able to self-reflect, you’re already on the right path to potential improvements in well-being, health and even career success.Ī couple decades ago, a statement like that might have read as the gimmicky promotion of unproven theories or pseudoscience. But what’s happening inside your mind when you’re doing these activities?Īs it turns out, you may be engaging in self-reflection. This will help my children to grow morally and physically upright. When you’re doing yoga, taking a walk in nature, meditating or doing controlled breathing, what are you really doing? Perhaps you’re getting some exercise or just answering the call of the daily routine. Since physical health is also important, I will ensure that my children get adequate time to play. By so doing, I will be able to develop my children morally. I will also ensure that there is close attachment between us. This will help them learn to be independent and therefore creative. I will also ensure that I am supportive to their decisions. This will give me an opportunity to interact with them. Firstly, i will ensure that I spare enough time to be with my children. In conclusion, I feel that when I am ready to parent, I will incorporate some of the ways my own parents raised me as well as adapting with the times. Therefore, there is need for children to spend more time with their parents. Since the children are exposed to many things at an early age for instance through the media, I think it is important for parent to begin counseling their children at an early age. It is important for those responsible with parenting role to consider that the world is changing very fast and therefore a need to have change on parenting approaches. In other words, it increased my independence in decision making. I felt that I had the ability to make reasonable decisions. This made me feel good and encouraged me in whatever I did. I remember my parents used to support me in my decisions whenever they felt it was not harmful to me. Therefore, it is important for the parents to ensure that they don’t dictate everything to their children. May be, this could be the area they can perform best. For instance, in case a child is interested in playing musical instruments, the parents must not dictate on otherwise. As a result, I was able to receive guidance on various issues, the fact that enabled me grow morally upright.Īlthough it is necessary for the parents to participate in guiding children to make certain things, it is also necessary for them to respect the decisions and interests of their children. We freely hugged and discussed many intimate issues. I personally grew up in close attachment to my parents. They will therefore have a chance to correct and teach their children on the best ways of conduct. When children are open to their parents, then the parents can easily identify when their children are about to go astray. This will avoid stress and other mental disturbances among the children. In such kind of a relationship, children will be free to talk about their problems openly to their parents. For instance, parents may initiate discussions about the personal lives of their children. It is important for the parents to ensure that they are open-minded to their children. This said the type of role that I will take on in parenting my child will be a balance of a demanding one as well as a supportive structure both physically and mentally for my child. Though there are various arrays of ways of raising one’s child I feel that when I am ready to parent I will incorporate some of the ways my own parents raised me as well as adapting with the times.

1/4/2024 0 Comments Import svg into fontforgeThis does assume that we can copy a subset of shapes in our document that correspond to a single glyph. Much of typeface design is about how a single glyph looks, but it is also very much about how all the glyphs look together. In practice, I've always opted for option #3 - I find that seeing all my glyphs side by side actually helps me design the glyphs themselves. Glyphr Studio can import glyphs as individual SVG files, but it can also accept pasted SVG code as text. The pros for #1 and #2 is that there may be some automated way to save single artboards or layers as individual SVG files. Use one wide artboard to show glyphs side by side.Create 95 artboards to show all glyphs at once.Create a single artboard with 95 layers. You don't have to design all of them, but there are a few main ways to handle all these glyphs: The Basic Latin Character Range in Unicode has 95 characters - letters, numbers, and symbols. The first decision for setting up your workspace is how to handle all the glyphs. and Glyphr Studio will do the right thing when it comes to scaling and moving your shapes to the right place.Īt the very least you should decide on an overall Em Square size (either 1000 or 2048) and also decide where the baseline falls within that square. When we start to import SVG information later on, you can tell the import tool about overshoots, ascender heights, and descender heights. Glyphr Studio knows about all of these metrics. This is usually done to visually compensate between rounded letters and squared-off letters. Overshoot (10 Em Units) the distance that rounded letters extend above or below guide lines.X Height (400 Em Units) distance from the baseline to the top of (not-rounded) lowercase letters. Many times this is shorter than the overall Ascender. Cap Height (675 Em Units) distance from the baseline to the top of the tallest capital letter.Baseline - split between the ascender and descender. The size of the descender is usually shown as a negative number. Descender (-300 Em Units) distance from the baseline down to the bottom of the lowest letter.Ascender (700 Em Units) distance from the baseline up to the tallest letter. Here is a quick run-down, with Glyphr Studio defaults in parenthesis. In typeface design lingo, these main measurements are called glyph metrics or key metrics. Most individual glyphs are not 1000 Em Units tall, or 1000 Em Units wide - but this Em Square is the default overall design space. Glyphr Stuido has a default setting of 1000 Em Units (which is very common for fonts, 2048 Em Units is the other common size) which means from the top of the tallest letter to the bottom of the descender measures a total of 1000 units. Em's are the unit of measure for font files, but for simplicity you can think of them as pixels. Glyphs (or characters) in a typeface exist in what's called an Em Square. Glyphr Studio has a powerful Import SVG tool, so this tutorial will go through setting up your external tool, creating glyphs in SVG format, then importing them to Glyphr Studio. Many people have some glyphs designed in a different program like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape, or maybe prefer to do their design work in those programs. This tutorial, however, will start from a more common scenario. So, it could be the only tool you need to create a whole typeface from start to finish. Glyphr Studio provides a large set of custom-designed vector editing tools for typeface design. Glyphr Studio was born it's focus is to make it easy for first-time typeface designers or hobbyists to create font files. Since I couldn't find an affordable typeface design tool for Windows, I did what any Interaction Designer / JavaScript aficionado would do - I set out to create my own typeface design tool that was web-based. Since that time FontForge is now available on all platforms - if you are looking for an advanced typeface designer that is free and open source, I whole-heartedly recommend it!Ģ010 was also around the time that HTML5 Canvas started to become (somewhat) available. and all the other options were quite expensive. Photography seemed to Vazquez an ideal intersection to study human-machine interactions in general - which is all part of the overall mission in Vazquez’s laboratory. These include a GIF of a dog sticking its head outside a car window at high speeds, audio samples of children laughing and goats bleating, and a meme of a man making a face at the camera with the quote “If Monday had a face… This would be it.” And if all else fails, there’s the classic “Say cheese!” The big picture student in Vazquez’s lab, programmed Shutter to have a wide range of funniness. Humor is, of course, subjective, and one person’s comedy gold could leave another audience cold. We’re not really going after what the best joke is, but how we can use this humor to elicit smiles and use that to take better pictures. “We’ve been trying different kinds of humor that the robot photographer can use. “That made us interested in how to make the robot humorous,” she said. In talking to human photographers, a common theme that came up was that laughter is a great way to make people comfortable in front of the camera. “Now that we have a social agent that can engage people and change what they’re doing, we can ask, ‘What opportunities does that open for taking photos?’” Marynel Vasquez, assistant professor of computer science, and undergraduate student Annie Gao test the next generation of Shutter. “We’re looking at what the robot photographer can do to get more positive reactions from people,” said Vazquez, assistant professor of computer science. Vazquez and her team are focusing on the special ability of good photographers to spark that instant of joy and capture it in a photo. When people in a photo look glum or expressionless, all the compositional details won’t save it. But as professional photographers will tell you, that’s only half the job. Most work in robot photography has homed in on the technical side of things - focus, lighting, placement of subject. Another is the corridor between Becton and Dunham Labs, a spot teeming with students and faculty as they pass to classes. One is in the John Klingenstein Lab at the Center for Engineering Innovation & Design. Vazquez has a few places she’d like to station it, all of which have good foot traffic. Built with a stylish retro-futuristic look, including “eyes” on a touch screen programmed to interact with people, the robot photographer - they call it Shutter - is designed to catch the attention of passers-by. She and her research team have built a robot designed to negotiate the quick but very complex interactions between photographer and subject - that is, putting someone at ease and drawing out a genuine smile, all in a matter of seconds. There are technical details like composition and lighting, but there’s also a matter of connecting emotionally with the photo’s subjects. Good portrait photography is as much art as it is science. While representing yourself may save you money in attorney’s fees, it could end up costing you more in the long run if you are convicted of a crime. This includes filing all the necessary paperwork, appearing in court on the scheduled dates, and arguing their own case before a judge or jury. Suddenly we had far more work to do, with 30% fewer employees. By early 2002 our DVD-by-mail subscription business was growing like crazy. Then, a bit unexpectedly, DVD players became the hot gift that Christmas. It became clear that we needed to put the IPO on hold and lay off a third of our employees. But after the dot-com bubble burst and the 9/11 attacks occurred, things changed. Netflix had been growing quickly: We’d reached about 120 employees and had been planning an IPO. But first I’ll share two conversations I had with early employees, both of which helped shape our overall philosophy. In this article I’ll go beyond the bullet points to describe five ideas that have defined the way Netflix attracts, retains, and manages talent. All that aside, the approach is compelling because it derives from common sense. subscriber base grew to nearly 29 million. The most obvious one is that Netflix has been really successful: During 2013 alone its stock more than tripled, it won three Emmy awards, and its U.S. People find the Netflix approach to talent and culture compelling for a few reasons. But we were surprised that an unadorned set of 127 slides-no music, no animation-would become so influential. We realized that some of the talent management ideas we’d pioneered, such as the concept that workers should be allowed to take whatever vacation time they feel is appropriate, had been seen as a little crazy (at least until other companies started adopting them). But when Reed Hastings and I (along with some colleagues) wrote a PowerPoint deck explaining how we shaped the culture and motivated performance at Netflix, where Hastings is CEO and I was chief talent officer from 1998 to 2012, we had no idea it would go viral. It’s been viewed more than 5 million times on the web. Sheryl Sandberg has called it one of the most important documents ever to come out of Silicon Valley. Forget throwing parties and handing out T‑shirts make sure every employee understands what the company needs most and exactly what’s meant by “high performance.” Talent managers should think like businesspeople and innovators first, and like HR people last. You’ve got to actually model and encourage the behavior you talk up. Leaders own the job of creating the company culture. Don’t rate them on whether they are good mentors or fill out paperwork on time. Offer generous severance rather than holding on to workers whose skills no longer fit your needs.
